Tuberz

Tuberz was a project created by a team of four during a Society of Women Engineers Hackathon. Out of the given three tracks, we chose to focus on education. Our team was moved to take action by the significant number of students who face difficulties attending their professors' office hours because of scheduling conflicts or a lack of awareness about tutoring resources that could assist them in their studies.

Role: Product Designer
Term: April 2023

Tools: Figma
Project Type: Group

During the creation of Tuberz we faced many challenges and encountered many limitations

Overall after this exhilarating experience I learned

Scalability

Time-management

Cohesive Design

Creating an app that relies on users from different time zones necessitates making it multilingual and culturally adaptable to meet diverse user needs and preferences. However, due to time constraints, we focused our design on a North American audience.

Creating an app with multiple features and two distinct interfaces made it challenging to manage our time effectively and stay coordinated as a group.

Another limitation was ensuring that the design remained cohesive across different interfaces, which became challenging as team members worked on separate components of the app. This sometimes led to inconsistencies in the overall look and feel.

This project made me understand how in depth product design really is. I learned how to adjust in a fast paced environment and without skipping steps. Creating a product involves a lot of background research and time, brainstorming ideas and features of the app. In the time frame we decided to focus on perfecting the content of this app rather than design. As important as visuals are, our team made the decision to continue to research features that would enhance the app. Making that decision helped me grow as a designer as I learned how to be decisive considering the solution we wanted to provide and the time frame we were given.

We are at the hackathon... now what?

During the Hackathon, our team was given three different tracks to choose from. We decided to focus on education because, as college students, we had all faced various learning challenges. Drawing from our diverse experiences, we aimed to address these gaps using technology. With a broad topic, we needed to pinpoint a specific problem and plan and create a solution, all within 24 hours.

“What is the most frustrating thing we face today?”

“It seems like time and resources are our biggest issue. So how can we fix this using technology?”

"I usually work at night, so it's tough finding someone to help me with my homework during those hours."

"Figuring out a schedule when I have work, school, and personal time."

"What if we created an app that allows for students and tutors all over the world to connect on one platform. Students can have access to tutoring and class materials at any time of the day."

Great, we found our problem and the solution!

As students what does our day look like, where do the issues begin?

What features would add more benefit to students?

Problem: How can we create a tutoring platform that ensures students worldwide have access to academic support and class materials at any time of day?

Solution: Noticing how students struggled to find help with schoolwork in a fast-paced learning environment, our team created an app that offers 24/7 access to tutors. The app provides additional materials like practice exams, past exams, and worksheets. It allows users to switch between teacher and student profiles and includes a real-time messaging feature for immediate assistance. Designed to be student-led and nationwide, the app ensures the availability of online tutors at any hour.

1

Students often missed classes and social events due to school related events (club meetings, school work, projects, etc.)

2

Students would have schedule conflicts with office hours for their class. Oftentimes they would have to find ways to fend for themselves.

3

The amount of work from other classes make it difficult to keep up with the specific class the student struggles with.

  • We decided to have a general idea of how the design should look like and as we move forward we minced the design and the colors.

  • We decided to add a calendar feature so that they could visualize their time and plan and schedule ahead.

  • It was a familiar layout, not unknown territory for many users.

  • This can be good as users would not hesitate in using the app.

  • We were able to include all solutions into the design.

  • Different colors for different modes (Teacher and student).

  • Time constraints made us focus on perfecting key areas, but leaving supplemental pieces of the design for future updates.

  • There was no design created to notify the user of future meetings or when they were able to schedule sessions.

Solution

After initial sketching we evaluated our design

To the drawing board!

As a team we began to map out what the average student went through allowing us identify pain points within their daily routine.

Past exam and worksheet material

Student would be able to look at past exams and solutions to practice before the big test.

Live messaging

Being able to message tutors at any time of the day. They have the ability to send class material for further clarification

The ability to be a student AND tutor

Once approved as a tutor, users can also sign up as students, making the app multi-functional. They can easily switch between the tutor and student interfaces for a seamless experience.
